What is vegetable-tanned leather?

Tanning is the process that makes an animals hide into leather. Vegetable in this context refers to the type of natural tannins used, from tree barks like oak, or spruce, or chestnut, or things like rhubarb roots or olive leaves. Most tanneries use their own signature blend. Vegetable tanning - or veg tan - has been around for more than 5,000 years, yet only accounts for an estimated 10% of the leather made today. This method is a skilled trade, unlike the other 90% which is chrome tanned. Vegetable-tanned leather only gets better with age, instead of cracking and drying out, the leather develops a beautiful patina and lasts for lifetimes.
